Question by John Smith: Why do car subs/amps have such overrated power ratings?
Look at your typical “1500 watt” amplifier. It’s 1500 watts peak at 2 ohms. Then it’s 600 watts RMS at 2 ohms, and finally 300 watts RMS at 4 ohms (which is pretty typical for a sub setup).

I find it funny when my friends brag about their “4000 watt” systems (really, 900 watts the way they’ve set them up. 4000 watts in reality would require extremely thick wires and probably several batteries.

The 1500watt for instance is just its max power rating, meaning if need be it could hold 1500w for a little bit. The rms rating is what is plays on a regular basis and can handle safely.
